Fruit:
Small jelly-bean sized red berry with thin skin, and rather scant translucent pulp. The seed occupies most of the fruit.
History/Origin:
Africa.
Species Observations:
Plant in an acidic medium such a pine bark compost, or peat moss based soil mixtures. Make sure it is aerated and well-drained. Use only small amounts of acid loving plant fertilizer, as this species will burn/shock easily from too much chemical fertilizer.
Propogation:
Most often from seed, although cuttings can also be taken.
Container Culture:
Small stature and slow growth make this species ideal for growing in a container.
Medicinal Uses:
Fruits are being used to help dull down metallic tastes of food in chemotherapy patients, and restore appetite.

Eaten fresh. Fruits (skins) can also be dried, although they tend to lose their active compounds after a few months of room-temperature storage. Preserve dried fruits in a freezer.
