Flowering/Pollination:
Cauliflorous; white filamentose flowers occur abundantly in late spring. In tropical regions, this species can flower twice during the year, with the largest crops in summer.

Good drought and salt tolerance
Soil/Nutrition:
Prefers sandy soils with good fertility, but will flourish just about anywhere. It often grows along riverbanks, and does not mind constantly moist soils, being often subjected to standing water and flooding.

Fruit:
Olive sized fruit, purple, sweet and slightly astringent. Flesh is soft, watery, much like a plum. Wild fruits are more astringent than cultivated types.
History/Origin:
Native to India and Burma, but has become naturalized throughout Southeast Asia, and most tropical regions of the world. In the Pacific Islands, Caribbean, and South Florida this species has proven invasive.
Species Observations:
This species bears heavy crops of soft, purple-staining fruits which make quite a spattered mess of roads and sidewalks.
Propogation:
By seed, air layer, cuttings, or or graft. There are a few named cultivars, which have either large, sweet fruits or are entirely seedless.
Container Culture:
Possible, but not ideal
Medicinal Uses:
The fruit, but particularly the seed is used to remedy diabetes and high blood pressure. The bark, flowers, and leaves are also used in cases of diabetes. Compounds in the living tissue of the tree appear to lower blood sugar quickly.
