Main Uses:
Ornamental.
Growth Rate:
Moderate.
Mature Height/Spread:
In warm climates, the trees may grow tall and slender, especially in ideal sun and soil. In colder climates the trunks are shorter and stout as they are slower growing.
Flowering/Pollination:
Typically, separate male and female plants. Though rare, both sexes may also occur on the same plant. Flower stalk to 3 feet long, yellow flowers.
Tolerance:
Moderately tolerant of drought. Salt tolerance is presumedly moderate, as trees are very adaptable to soil conditions.
Soil/Nutrition:
Prefers fertile soils with reasonable drainage; the palm is very adaptable, it even does well in northern clay soils. Needs good drainage and soil dryness in the winter for best cold-hardiness.
Light:
Can live in 2/3 shade in warmer climates. Otherwise, it is adaptable to different light conditions.
Wind:
Like all cold-hardy palms, it is very susceptible to cold, drying winter winds. Plant this palm in a wind-protected location (or construct a winter wind shelter). This will prevent it from losing leaf tissue to freezing dehydration.
Temperature:
Once Trachycarpus Fortunei has begun to develop a small trunk, they attain their peak hardiness. The general species Trachycarpus Fotunei is hardy to 10 degrees F and down to 0 at the bud with leaf die-back. Some selections have been chosen for superior hardiness, the most remarkable of which is the "Tesan" variety, bred specifically for superior cold tolerance. "Tesan" comes from Bejing, which is a Zone 6b climate, having yearly drops to -10 degrees F. This remarkable strain has uniquely thick leaves and husky appearance as compared with the typical species profile. The "Bulgaria" strain also shows a heightened tolerance to cold. "Bulgaria" comes from Plovdiv, Belgium, handling yearly temperature drops to at least -5 degrees F with little to no leaf loss.
Dangers:
None.
Diseases Prone:
None reported in cold climates. Grasshoppers may occasionally bite into the leaves.

History/Origin:
The species Trachycarpus Fortunei is native to subtropical China.
Species Observations:
Though it will grow in open sun in northern cold climates, it will lose its leaves to dehydration unless it is afforded protection from sun and winds. Even with near total leaf loss, the crown of this species is hardy to 0 degrees F. If the spear leaf pulls out during the spring, apply fungicides to prevent rotting, which is the enemy of the recovering bud tissue. It should send out a new spear leaf with a few weeks of warm weather. This species needs 3 seasons of growing to establish its roots and achieve its full cold hardiness. The most cold protection should be given during its first year when it is weakest.
Propogation:
Seeds, which take anywhere from 1 week to 6 months to germinate. The fresher, the better. Soaking them for 24 hours significantly speeds up the process. Removing the berry flesh dramatically helps germination success.
Container Culture:
Can be grown in a container for many years. It is a moderate growing species, however it does need at least part sun.
