Growth Rate:
Moderate to fast.
Mature Height/Spread:
Can be a very tall tree in the Amazon (120 feet), but is generally much smaller in cultivation (20-50 feet).
Flowering/Pollination:
Small white flowers on new growth, possible throughout most of the year. Trees are self fertile, but cross-pollination trees will significantly increase production.
Tolerance:
Fair drought tolerance, mild salt tolerance.
Soil/Nutrition:
Performs well on a neutral, fertile, well drained soil. Enjoys constantly moist, but not waterlogged soil. Feed constantly with organic manures and mulch.
Light:
Light shade to full sun.
Wind:
Sturdy when mature.
Temperature:
Protect when young. Can take occasional frosts when mature. Hard freezes will kill it.
Dangers:
None
Diseases Prone:
Fruit flies can be a problem with ripe fruits. Harvest fruit a few days early and ripen inside to avoid this issue.
Bearing Age:
4-5 years from seed, 2-3 years from graft.
Fruit:
Pale green to yellow when ripe. Skin exudes latex when cut. Flesh is translucent, mucilaginous, sweet, with subtle tones of caramel. Mature trees can produce many hundred fruits per year.
History/Origin:
Native throughout the Amazon, and is a popular dooryard fruit tree throughout Brazil. Grown widely by collectors and generally available worldwide.
Species Observations:
Really appreciates a constantly moist soil. Mulch this species constantly. Use animal manures and composts to fertilize as this tree is a heavy feeder when actively growing.
Propogation:
Commonly by seed, which is variable, and generally small-fruiting. Marcots (air-layers) are also used. Recommended Varieties: "Gray" is an Australian selection, single seeded, with copious amounts of large baseball to softball sized fruit. Highly recommend. "Caribou" is a single-seeded cultivar from south Florida. "Z1" and "Z2" are both large-fruited, delicious and prolific cultivars.
Container Culture:
Possible, but not ideal.
Medicinal Uses:
Unknown.
